Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary and Friends for Life Animal Outreach Join Forces
After many years of collaboration and advocacy on behalf of animals in the Sacramento
area, Friends for Life Animal Outreach has merged with Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary.
The organization will be known as Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary.
Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary — celebrating its 15th anniversary this year — was Sacramento ’s first no-kill animal rescue
organization founded in 1993. Shortly thereafter, Friends for Life Animal Outreach, also a no-kill rescue group, was established in 1996.
Both organizations are operated entirely by volunteers.
“In the past, both groups operated independently to accomplish the mutual goals of
improving the lives of homeless and abused animals,” said Happy Tails President
Becky Maclay. “Now the Sacramento community has the strength of both groups
working together.”
In 2000, Happy Tails established an Adopt-A-Pet Center at 721 56th Street in Sacramento ,
where cats live in a home-like, cage-free environment. Sharing a vision for a larger facility with
Friends for Life, Happy Tails is currently searching for a new location, and the support of contributors
and volunteers from both organizations is vital.
In addition, Happy Tails and Friends for Life boast a variety of programs that support
animal welfare, including a foster program where volunteers open their homes to rescued
animals by providing socialization and care before placement; an assistance program
to help the homeless, senior citizens and low-income pet owners pay for spaying/
neutering and veterinary care; and a feral cat program operated by volunteers who
maintain established feral colonies and provide “trap, neuter & release” to the public.
For more than a decade, Happy Tails and Friends for Life have relied on the generosity
of volunteers and the charity of benefactors who have supported the efforts of both organizations.
Primary sources of funding include individual donors, corporate sponsors, grants, bequests and
fundraising activities. Both organizations are recognized as tax exempt with a nonprofit 501(c)(3)
status through the federal and state tax authorities.
Discussion of a “dream team” merger between the two organizations has taken place
many times over the years. Now the dream has been realized with the successful
merger of two of the most respected rescue groups in the Sacramento area.
“By pooling our resources we can accomplish more, collectively, for animals in need,” said
Friends for Life President Michelle Brown.
Happy Tails will continue to accept surrendered animals previously adopted from Friends for Life or Happy Tails for any reason.
