Stocking Up
Before bringing your new pet home, you should purchase some items your cat will need to feel comfortable and safe in its new environment. Preparing in advance will make the transition easier and more enjoyable for both you and your cat. Here are some items that we recommend purchasing:
- Food - see Feeding Kittens and Cats
- Food and Water Dishes - those that are easy to clean and of a non-tip design (some cats like to place a paw on the edge of their bowls while eating)
- Carrier - plastic airline crate
- Bed - You might want to provide a bed for your cat, but be forewarned. Cats can have very definite ideas of appropriate sleeping quarters, so even the most elegant cat bed might not tempt your new cat. Another solution is to fashion a bed from a small-corrugated cardboard box with a comfortable pad inside.
- Scratching post - one that allows the cat to fully stretch its body
- Litter box - a large one that is several inches deep and gives the cat plenty of space to move around
- Litter - cats often prefer specific types of litter, so be prepared to try different brands. Kittens must have clay litter due to health risks associated with scoop litter.
- Toys - cats love to play, and often have different toys they like. Avoid toys that aren't "cat-proof" and have ribbons, feathers, strings, eyes, or other small parts that could be chewed and/or ingested
